"Almost every day after school, I would spend some time at a community center located in the housing projects where I grew up. Enter Mrs. Wellerson into my life. She volunteered at the center and taught us craft projects.
"Mrs. Wellerson would often gather us around the upright piano. [She would] play for us and accompany our singing. Week after week I insisted that she come to our apartment to meet my mom. Mrs. Wellerson finally agreed. When she came to our apartment, I announced to my mother, ‘Here is my piano teacher!' They looked at each other in surprise, and the rest is history.
"This [was] a case of divine intervention. Neither I nor my folks had any idea that Mrs. Wellerson was a graduate of one of the most distinguished schools of music in the world! What I remember was a lady who oozed nurturing encouragement. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. ... I try to emulate her when I teach."
