Why do some people not have enough to eat?
Kids, hooray for asking this question! It's a really hard question that God wants us to ask.
Did you know that there is actually enough food in the world for everyone to eat?
That's right, enough for everyone. "Enough" is a hard word for kids and grownups. A lot of times we want more than enough. We think we need heaps and heaps of food and other stuff. Why do we take more than our enough? Because it's hard to stop. And it's hard to share. But when we take too much, someone else doesn't get enough.
Pretend it's your birthday. Your cake looks so delicious! Yum-yum. Look at that ooey-gooey frosting. Pretend to cut the cake, put it on plates and eat your piece. The ice cream is nice and melty and it mixes up with the cake. Oh, you want another piece. Everyone else is playing outside, so you just take a bite of another piece of cake, and then another bite, and another bite. Uh-oh! Now one of your friends is not going to get any cake. See what I mean? It's hard to stop and it's hard to share.
Does God want some people to eat too much and other people to starve? No way! God made all those people. God made you and your family and your friends and all the people in the world. All God's people need to eat. God reminds us that everyone in the world can eat when we all learn to share.
Do you want to learn to share? God shares. God shares love with everyone. God says sharing love is so fun that God invites us to try it too.
I think you asked this hard question because you care about hungry people. That's great! God helps us care. God helps us to stop from taking too much and to start sharing what we have.
Did you know that there are kids who are sharing and feeding hungry people? Here's a story you might like.
I told you that you asked a hard question. Good for you for caring! Now you know God's answer: Share! Here's a prayer for your family: "God teach us to care and share, so everyone can eat. Amen"
