In Morning Has Broken, illustrator Tim Ladwig provides original art for the beloved hymn by British author Eleanor Farjeon (1881-1965).
A writer of children's books, poetry and plays, Farjeon originally wrote the song for children based on Psalm 118:24.
Ladwig imagines a boy and his grandfather visiting an urban park and encountering the beauty of God's creation throughout the day.
Adults who want the challenge of introducing new words (without the expectation that the child needs to learn them all) will enjoy Morning Has Broken.
Although the lyrics use many words that may be unfamiliar, the pictures provide some context.
Adults can sing the song with children, talk about the meaning of the word "praise," ask children to "tell" the story happening in the pictures, pick out one thing on every page for them to find, or take turns sharing what each sees on the pages.
Readers may be surprised by what both they and the children notice and say.
